Louis Riel, descendant of the voyageurs and the First
Nations, founder of Manitoba and champion of Metis
and Francophone rights, has left a rich legacy of
which Metis and Francophones are proud. In 2001, the
Louis Riel Collection was donated by the Union nationale
métisse de Saint-Joseph and transferred from
the Provincial Archives of Manitoba to the Centre
du patrimoine. It is an invaluable complement to the
numerous collections of the Société
historique de Saint-Boniface, many of which contain
other Riel documents.
